Filament is a cylinder of known density
Volume is mass / density. Cross-section is π r² with r = diameter/20 centimetres. Length in metres is volume / area / 100. PLA 1.24 g/cm³ at 1.75 mm is about 335 m per kilogram.
Spool cardboard
Weigh filament only. The remaining-grams field is leftover plastic, not the boxed spool mass.
Worked examples
1 kg PLA 1.75 mm
About 335 m. The same mass at 2.85 mm is about 126 m.
Limits of this page
- Foamed, wood, and carbon filaments can miss the listed density.
- Diameter tolerance ±0.05 mm changes length.
